England completed 3-0 whitewash ahead of the T20 series

England completed a commanding 3-0 series whitewash over West Indies with a seven-wicket triumph at The Oval on Tuesday.

The hosts chased down a rain-adjusted target of 246 in 40 overs with more than 10 overs to spare.

The victory marked England's first ODI series win since their disappointing 2023 World Cup campaign and their first clean sweep since defeating the Netherlands in 2022.

Under new captain Harry Brook's leadership, England have rediscovered their white-ball prowess following a period of decline that saw them endure three consecutive poor major tournament performances.

The comprehensive victory sets up England's three-match T20 series against the same opponents, which begins at Chester-le-Street on Friday.

Jamie Smith produced a spectacular innings, smashing 64 from just 28 deliveries to propel England's chase. The 24-year-old wicketkeeper, playing on his home ground, struck nine fours and three sixes in his maiden ODI half-century.

Opening alongside Ben Duckett, who contributed 58 from 46 balls, Smith helped England race to 100 in just eight overs - the joint-fourth fastest any men's team has reached three figures in ODI cricket. Their opening partnership of 93 runs came in just seven overs.

Despite never having opened in professional cricket before this series, Smith justified England's decision to promote him.

After receiving the player of the match award, Smith said: "It was nice to come out here and play aggressive. It's the way the team want me to play, to set up a nice start."

Harry Brook's captaincy tenure began perfectly with this comprehensive series victory.

The new skipper, who took over after Jos Buttler's resignation following England's recent tournament struggles, has overseen an immediate revival in the team's white-ball fortunes.

Brook said after securing his first series win as captain: "It feels awesome. This last game, we played beautifully on quite a good pitch. We didn't let them get too many runs against us and finished it off beautifully,"

The clean sweep represents a significant turnaround for England's limited-overs side, which had endured a prolonged slump since the 2023 World Cup.

Brook's bold decisions, including the promotion of Smith to opener, have already paid dividends as England rediscovered their aggressive batting approach that previously brought them success.

West Indies posted 251-9 in their rain-interrupted 40 overs, with Sherfane Rutherford scoring 70 from 70 balls.

The tourists had struggled at 154-7 before Gudakesh Motie's counter-attacking 63 at number eight rescued their innings.

Motie added 91 runs in 68 balls with Alzarri Joseph, providing late impetus after Adil Rashid had taken 3-40, including Justin Greaves and Roston Chase in consecutive deliveries.

The leg-spinner was on a hat-trick before Motie struck him for six.

The match start was delayed by 30 minutes after the West Indies team bus became stuck in traffic at Parliament Square due to faulty traffic lights at Vauxhall Bridge.

Several England players abandoned their team bus and cycled to The Oval on Lime bikes to avoid the gridlock.

England's bowling showed room for improvement despite the victory, with their pace attack struggling for consistency.

The three frontline seamers lost their line and length regularly, particularly against Motie and Joseph's late partnership.

Looking ahead to the T20 series, West Indies will be bolstered by the return of all-rounders Jason Holder and Andre Russell, plus former captain Rovman Powell.

Captain Shai Hope remained optimistic despite the defeat: "There's always some positives if we dissect it. There's a lot of things that we can take from the series and a lot of things that we can improve on."

Hope added: "We need to take the positives into the T20 series because we can't change the past. We need to come out all guns blazing in the T20 series."
