Fortune smiled on England during this crucial stand, with Crawley dropped on 42 and Duckett reprieved on 97.

The hosts maintained an impressive scoring rate of 4.55 runs per over throughout their innings.

The BBC described Duckett's performance as "one of the finest innings by an England batter", placing him among Headingley's batting heroes including Ian Botham, Mark Butcher, Shai Hope and Ben Stokes.

The match turned tense when Duckett and Harry Brook fell to successive Shardul Thakur deliveries, leaving England four wickets down and still 118 runs short.

India sensed an opportunity as pressure mounted.

Captain Ben Stokes joined Joe Root to steady the ship, adding 49 crucial runs before Stokes' dismissal to Ravindra Jadeja via a reverse-sweep to short third man. Jamie Smith then arrived with 69 still required.
