The Lionesses' are gearing up to defend their Euros victory from 2022

The England Lionesses will enjoy five-star luxury during their European Championship title defence, with the Football Association selecting the Dolder Grand hotel in Zurich as their tournament base.

Perched atop a hill overlooking the Swiss city, the hotel boasts suites offering Alpine views alongside premium amenities including Michelin-starred restaurants and a sprawling 4,000-square-metre spa complex.

FA staff evaluated 23 potential basecamp facilities before settling on the Dolder Grand, which has previously accommodated the Swiss national team.

The choice proves strategically sound, with England scheduled to play two group-stage matches in Zurich whilst training at the nearby Sportanlage Au complex in Opfikon.

Hotel general manager Markus Granelli confirmed the establishment's commitment to "create an optimal 'home from home' environment" for Sarina Wiegman's squad and coaching staff.

The Dolder Grand's distinguished guest list includes world leaders Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela and Bill Clinton, alongside Hollywood stars Elizabeth Taylor and Leonardo DiCaprio, plus fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld and Jimmy Choo.

The hotel's 175 impeccably furnished rooms occupy a striking architectural fusion that marries old-world grandeur with contemporary design.

The main building, resembling a Disney castle, originally opened in 1899 before celebrated British architect Sir Norman Foster's studio added two modern wings during extensive renovations.

This blend creates an elegant balance between historical charm and 21st-century sophistication.

The construction seamlessly integrates the original structure's fairy-tale aesthetic with Foster and Partners' sleek modern additions, resulting in accommodation that maintains luxury standards befitting the Lionesses' championship ambitions.

The spa complex formed a crucial factor in the FA's selection process, with facilities designed around four central pillars according to Granelli: "relax, vitality, beauty and detox designed to restore physical balance" - ideal for post-match recovery. The centrepiece features a sweeping atrium housing a distinctive teardrop-shaped indoor pool.

Separate men's and women's facilities provide comprehensive wellness options including saunas, steam rooms, plunge pools and an ice chamber for therapeutic recovery.

The hotel's gym, whilst well-equipped, appears compact for a squad exceeding 20 players.

However, the standout feature remains the outdoor hot tub, offering panoramic views across Zurich's fairy-tale landscape.

This combination of recovery facilities and scenic vistas creates an environment perfectly suited to maintaining peak physical condition throughout the tournament's demanding schedule.

The Lionesses will have access to exceptional dining options should they venture beyond their dedicated nutritionist and chefs.

The hotel's main restaurant holds two Michelin stars, serving sophisticated dishes such as hake with goose liver, yuzu and miso.

Blooms provides nutritious vegetarian, vegan, organic and seasonal options, with all produce grown onsite to ensure freshness and quality.

Service standards remain impeccable throughout, with staff readily adjusting dishes to individual preferences and proactively suggesting personalised breakfast options based on previous dining choices.

Beyond culinary excellence, players seeking mental respite from football can explore the hotel's contemporary art collection featuring over 100 pieces from 90 artists including Salvador Dali, Anish Kapoor, Max Ernst, Keith Haring and Takashi Murakami.

The hotel's award-winning concierge team provides comprehensive services to enhance the squad's stay, including e-bike hire for exploring the surrounding forest and complimentary BMW X1 vehicles for longer excursions.

These amenities create an environment where comfort might actually pose challenges, with concerns that the England team could become too settled in their luxurious surroundings.

The timing proves particularly poignant given recent squad changes, with key players Mary Earps and Millie Bright departing the team setup.

These former teammates may experience regret witnessing their colleagues' premium accommodation arrangements during July's tournament, whilst those selected for Wiegman's squad benefit from arguably the finest possible preparation base.
