The Gypsy King could still come out of retirement

Tyson Fury’s family are urging the former heavyweight world champion to remain in retirement, despite growing speculation that he could return to the ring next year.

The 37-year-old Briton officially announced his retirement for the fourth time in January, just weeks after his second consecutive defeat to Oleksandr Usyk, yet he has continued to hint at the possibility of one last fight.

Promoter Frank Warren has said that Fury remains interested in a trilogy bout with Usyk and has not ruled out a comeback in 2026.

However, he revealed that the boxer’s wife, Paris, and his brothers are united in their belief that the “Gypsy King” should walk away from the sport for good.

Speaking to the BBC, Warren said: “We’ll wait until next year and we’ll see what happens. He’s indicated he wants to fight.

“The fight he told me he definitely wants to do is Usyk again. The fight everybody talks about is obviously Anthony Joshua, and I have no problem with either provided he wants to fight.

“I know his wife doesn’t want him to fight, his brothers don’t want him to fight. So that’s going to be his choice.

“But if he is going to fight, I’d much rather he does it now rather than come back in three or four years.”

Fury’s manager, Spencer Brown, echoed the sentiment that while the fighter’s family hope he stays retired, the man himself may struggle to resist the pull of the ring.

“Will he fight again? My personal opinion, yes. That’s my personal opinion, but I’m not Tyson Fury,” Brown said.

“Does his family want him to fight again? Probably no. If you speak to Shane or Hughie, what’s the point?

“Because they love him dearly. I love him dearly too, but in my opinion he’s got an itch he’s got to scratch. I still think he’s got a bee in his bonnet about Usyk.

“He’d like to fight him more than anybody. And of course, there’s a lot of people courting him with serious money.”

Fury, who has won every major heavyweight title during his career, has suggested he no longer has the motivation to continue.

In a recent interview for his Furocity energy drinks brand, he dismissed the idea of returning to boxing, regardless of the financial incentive.

“I’m 37 years old, I’ve been punched for the last 25 years. What do I want to go back to boxing for?” he said.

“It used to be for the money, the titles, but now I’ve got more money than I can spend and all the belts I could ever want. Does it make me any happier? No. The climb was better than the mountain peak.”

He added: “I could go back to boxing at any given time, but I just don’t want to.

“I’ve got no interest in the limelight or getting punched again.

“You could offer me £1billion today, and it wouldn’t move the needle. Boxing doesn’t take any prisoners, it only takes casualties.

“For me to be sat here with all my faculties intact, having won every belt and made a good life for my family, I’ve done really well.

“But I don’t want to tempt fate. How many times can you go back to the well before something gives?”
