A Cheshire couple who scooped a £6.1million National Lottery jackpot in 2016 now spend much of their time giving back to their local community through volunteer work.

Kevin and Michele Jones saw their lives transform a decade ago when Kevin, who was working as a bus driver at the time, discovered he had matched all six Lotto numbers.

Rather than simply enjoying their wealth, the pair have embraced volunteering in the years since their windfall.

While they continue to appreciate the freedom their fortune provides, both Mr and Mrs Jones regularly dedicate their time to community projects near their home.

Mrs Jones has been part of the team at The Pantry @ Sandbach Hub for four years, where she assists people facing difficulties with food and living costs.

She said: "I've always wanted to help other people, so I've got the opportunity now."

Her husband spotted an advertisement seeking volunteers, prompting Mrs Jones to join from the very beginning.

The pantry offers affordable food alongside support services, linking residents with organisations providing guidance and practical assistance.

She added: "It's an incredible team that does incredible things for people, and I feel privileged to be part of it.

Her husband recalled the moment he realised he had become a millionaire whilst operating a bus service between Crewe and Newcastle-under-Lyme.

He said: "I won the lot - £6million! I rang my boss up and I said: 'Can I get off the bus at Crewe; can you take me off the service because something important has happened?'

"He said: 'Go on.' And I told him I'd won the lottery!"

Remarkably, Kevin returned to work the following morning to finish his shift.

Michele said: "He didn't want to let people down that were catching the bus to work."

On the evening of their win, the couple discussed how their newfound wealth would reshape their future, with supporting relatives emerging as their foremost concern.

Kevin said: "The first priority was to look after the family."

The winner added: "We've secured their futures. They have no mortgages anymore."

He reflected on how the jackpot lifted the everyday financial pressures that most people face.

He said: "We all have to go to work, we have obligations to pay mortgages, bills, etc, and all that was suddenly removed. We had the freedom to go where we wanted, when we wanted."

The couple subsequently relocated from Crewe to Sandbach to live nearer their family and have taken regular holidays to the Canary Islands.
