Matt Richards won three medals at the recent World Aquatics Championships

The father of British swimmer Matt Richards has dubbed the BBC 'absolutely dreadful' for their lack of coverage of the World Aquatics Championships.

The 20-year-old swimmer won gold in the 200metres freestyle, narrowly beating fellow Brit Tim Dean.

Richards then proceeded to claim another gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay before securing a bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay.

It was a stunning achievement for the youngster, who clearly has a bright future ahead of him.

Yet the BBC opted against televising the World Acquatic Championships, which were only available to watch on the Eurovision Sports website instead.

And Simon Richards slammed the broadcaster for failing to give the event any coverage on their news programmes in the evening.

He said on Twitter: "Absolutely dreadful. Hang your heads in shame."

The BBC have been in the spotlight over their sporting coverage in recent weeks.

Many fans of the Women's World Cup were appalled at pundits and presenters having to work in a green screen studio.

Especially given how they'd forked out a small fortune to send Gary Lineker and others to Qatar for the men's tournament last winter.

The BBC also faced criticism for their commentary of the men's Wimbledon final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, too.

Commentator Andrew Castle was accused of not condemning Djokovic after the Serb smashed a racket against the net.

Yet the BBC then released a statement confirming they weren't bothered by the complaints.

"We’ve received complaints from people who felt our commentary favoured Novak Djokovic and/or condoned his behaviour after hitting the net post with his racket," a statement said.

“While Andrew Castle highlighted that Djokovic’s anger and frustration was 'understandable' at such a crucial point in the match, it was also made clear that this behaviour is wrong, and that Djokovic rightly received a conduct violation for it.

"Andrew also highlighted that such behaviour can be dangerous, looking back at a similar instance with Djokovic, stating; 'Disqualified at the US Open in 2020 after unintentionally hitting a line judge. That was a dangerous moment for a lot of reasons'.

The statement added: "We recognise how these comments came across to some, however, and we’ve shared this with the programme team.

"Throughout the final, our team shared their analysis and praise for both players.

"They praised Alcaraz for such performances at such a young age, for the variety in his game, and Andrew did include particular praise of Alcaraz’s game too."

As for Richards, the swimmer was delighted after Great Britain narrowly missed out on a world record in the relay.

“We all knew that world record was potentially on the cards tonight," he said in the aftermath of the event.

"So I think that keeps us hungry for next year, pushing on to make that happen.

“That’s twice now we’ve won it on a world stage [Olympics and worlds] and been just off that record, so that’s the next job...to put our names at the top of that record board.”
