The late Queen's cousin explained how the diagnosis has helped her better understand herself

Flora Vesterberg, the late queen's cousin and granddaughter of Princess Alexandra of Kent, has revealed she was diagnosed with autism earlier this year.

Vesterbeg is currently 62nd in line to the throne in the Royal Family's line of succession.

The 30-year-old art historian and broadcaster shared her diagnosis with British Vogue, explaining how she has "struggled quietly with the challenges of neurodiversity since childhood" but is now "able to perceive its strengths."

Vesterberg told the magazine that "like many women, I only recently felt compelled to pursue a clinical assessment" ahead of beginning her PhD studies at The Courtauld Institute of Art.

She underwent "a complex series of psychiatric evaluations" and multiple questionnaires over the course of a week, with the assessment overseen by leading consultant psychiatrist Dr Dimitrios Paschos.

The late Queen's cousin explained how her diagnosis has helped her better understand herself.

She told Vogue: "I feel empowered by having a framework with which to understand my experiences and sensitivities.

"It brings a sense of relief as well as validation.

"I know that this will not only help me to be kinder to myself, but also help my community to support me effectively."

Dr Paschos described how "many autistic women learn to mask or camouflage their differences, consciously mimicking social norms so effectively that others miss the signs."

Vesterberg related to this observation whilst noting she enjoys research and public speaking.
