“The Duke and Duchess of Westminster are thrilled to announce the birth of their baby daughter. They have named her Cosima Florence Grosvenor,” the couple said.

Cosima’s name has Greek origins, derived from the word "kosmos". She was born into immense wealth as the daughter of one of Britain’s richest aristocrats.

The Duke, Hugh Grosvenor, is estimated to be worth around £10billion, with much of his fortune tied to a vast portfolio of land and property.

In the wake of Cosima’s birth, attention has turned to whether she could be in line to inherit her father’s titles and estate.

When Hugh became the 7th Duke of Westminster in 2016, he inherited the title and fortune from his father, the 6th Duke, as the only son and heir.

However, according to Wendy Bosberry-Scott, editor of Debrett's Peerage and Baronetage, the dukedom cannot pass through the female line.

“The dukedom of Westminster can only be passed down the male line, so it currently has no heir,” she told Hello!.

She added: “The Duke and Duchess [of Westminster] will need to produce a son for the titles to survive. Unless there is a change in the law, Lady Cosima will not inherit her father’s titles.”

A source close to the couple also spoke to the publication, saying the focus is firmly on their new life as a family of three.

They said: “The issue of titles and primogeniture is a matter for Government and parliament, and isn't something the Duke and Duchess would comment on, certainly not at this stage.

"They're just looking forward to spending time with their daughter as a family.”
