Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor will leave his Royal Lodge home in 2026

A drone prohibition zone has been expanded across the Sandringham estate, where Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is expected to take up residence after departing Royal Lodge on the Windsor Home Park estate.

The extension of aerial restrictions was disclosed yesterday, ahead of the royal's anticipated relocation to Norfolk.

Modern drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and thermal imaging technology pose significant privacy concerns, as they enable remote surveillance and recording of locations from considerable distances.

The restricted airspace is not a fresh security measure for the royal estate.

King Charles's 60-acre Norfolk property already benefits from year-round flight restrictions covering Sandringham House, the traditional Christmas gathering place for the Royal Family, as well as Anmer Hall to the east, the ten-bedroom country retreat belonging to the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The village offers limited amenities, comprising only a church and social club, with neither a public house nor a local shop serving residents.

The legislation establishing the expanded restricted zone was formally enacted on September 16, with enforcement commencing on September 22 this year.

According to the official order: "The Secretary of State has decided that it is necessary in the public interest to amend the restricted area in the Air Navigation."

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has formally submitted notice to vacate Royal Lodge, though the minimum required period of 12 months means he remains responsible for the Windsor property throughout the coming year.

Following months of resistance, the Duke appears disinclined to rush his departure.

Sources at Buckingham Palace maintain they anticipate Andrew will leave during the first three months of next year.

However, insiders suggest otherwise. "You're not going to see the removal vans outside Royal Lodge anytime soon," one source told The Times.

Representatives acting on behalf of Andrew convened with the Crown Estate at Royal Lodge on November 12 to address the formal handover of the property.
