All of King Charles's siblings held working roles within the Royal Family

A royal insider has accused the Royal Family of "woefully equipping" the members of the monarchy who are not directly in line to be King or Queen.

The former royal aide who worked for the Duke of York has claimed that Palace officials could do more to provide a pathway for royals considered "spares".

The insider told The I Paper: “There’s a lesson for all spares to the heir in this, and the people who advise them.

“They are expected to just get on and do the job but they’re often woefully equipped to do it.

"So maybe it falls to us to do more of the heavy lifting, to try to keep them on the straight and narrow."

Princess Anne and Prince Edward still hold their positions within the monarchy, but Prince Andrew stepped down as a working royal in 2019.

Prince William's brother, Prince Harry, also held a working role within the Royal Family until he decided to walk away from the Firm in 2020 alongside his wife, Meghan Markle.

Prince Harry wanted to secure a part-time working role for the Royal Family before his departure, but was told this was not possible.

Ingrid Seward told The I paper: "It’s not like it was in Charles’s youth, nowadays children make their own decisions.

"It’s just so different to when even William was brought up.

"I think children have immense choices now that they didn’t have even 15 years ago."

Marlene Koenig, a royal historian, added: "William and Catherine, to a certain extent, are going to rip up the rule book and do it their way."
