Their Majesties travelled to Cornwall to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Eden Project

King Charles and Queen Camilla visited The Eden Project in Cornwall today to celebrate the landmark attraction's 25th anniversary.

The royal couple were welcomed by pupils from Luxulyan School, who performed a singing display as Their Majesties arrived at the venue.

During the celebratory visit, the King and Queen used a ceremonial sword to slice through a commemorative cake marking the milestone. The Lord Lieutenant provided his sword for the occasion.

The pair learned about The Eden Project's ongoing efforts in education, community building, and environmental restoration during their tour of the famous biomes.

Their Majesties also had the opportunity to try out a newly installed marble run, an attraction featuring more than 100 metres of handcrafted wooden track.

The designer introduced the royal visitors to the feature, which was constructed using timber from trees felled by storms across Cornwall.

The King and Queen were given specially crafted wooden 'marbles' to send down the run, prompting His Majesty to joke: "That's one way of losing your marbles!"

The couple also spent time with gardeners and staff members, who explained the site's work restoring wildflower habitats and fostering connections between people and the natural environment.

Following the tour, the royal couple attended a celebratory Big Lunch gathering where they met local volunteers and supporters.

These community members are currently organising the forthcoming Big Lunch and Big Help Out weekend, scheduled for 5th to 8th June.

To commemorate the quarter-century milestone, Their Majesties revealed a special plaque at the site.

Before departing, the King and Queen received a unique gift: the commemorative wooden marbles they had used on the new attraction.

The handcrafted souvenirs, fashioned from storm-damaged Cornish timber, served as a lasting memento of their anniversary visit to the renowned environmental attraction.

The Eden Project officially reached its 25th anniversary on 17th March 2026, marking a significant chapter in its history as it prepares to expand to additional locations and deepen its focus on environmental and social initiatives.

The attraction was originally constructed within an abandoned clay pit, carved 60 metres into the earth with no natural soil and situated well below the water table.

Its iconic biomes now shelter thousands of plant species from ecosystems worldwide.

This year's Big Lunch and Big Help Out will unite for the first time from 5th to 8th June.

The Big Lunch has run annually since 2009, attracting over 10 million participants in 2025.
