Prince Harry wants his children to have the freedom to choose their royal futures

Princess Lilibet and Prince Archie's royal roles remain uncertain under Prince William, according to new claims.

Prince Harry is thought to want his children, Archie and Lilibet, to retain their HRH titles, ensuring they have the freedom to choose whether to become working royals in the future.

According to reports in the Guardian, the Duke of Sussex wishes to keep options open for Archie, six, and Lilibet, four, allowing them to decide between potential royal roles or more private lives.

A spokesperson for Prince Harry said: "We do not comment on private issues pertaining to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's children."

However, The Sunday Times reported that there is "bemusement in royal circles" at the idea, with sources suggesting such roles for the children are unlikely under Prince William's future reign.

A friend of Prince William told the outlet that the heir to the throne's perspective on his estrangement from Harry has shifted: "What has struck me the most recently is that he just doesn't mention it at all.

"It used to be that the family stuff was taking up a lot of space in his head; it was a very close relationship, and he was very upset.

"But he's not letting it get to him at all anymore. It is a change. It's sad, but it's a much healthier space for him to be at."

The Guardian alleged that passport applications for Archie and Lilibet were delayed after being submitted with the HRH titles included, with the process stretching nearly six months rather than the standard three weeks.

A legal source told the outlet that British Government officials appeared to be "dragging their feet," causing frustration for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

One source claimed: "The King hadn't wanted Archie and Lili to carry the titles, most of all the HRH, and the British passports, once created, would be the first and perhaps the only legal proof of their names."

Buckingham Palace strongly denied any royal involvement in the delay.

It was also reported that Harry consulted his uncle Charles Spencer about potentially using the Spencer surname during the passport impasse, with a source close to the Sussexes stating: "There was clear reluctance to issue passports for the kids."

Harry and Meghan retained their HRH titles after stepping back as senior royals in 2020, though Buckingham Palace clarified: "The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family."

Archie and Lilibet began using their prince and princess titles after King Charles acceded to the throne in 2022.
