Prince William is preparing for a slimmed-down monarchy

The future roles of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis remain undecided, according to new claims.

Royal aides are suggesting the children of the Prince and Princess of Wales will ultimately choose between life as working royals or independent careers.

Prince George, now 12, is expected to follow the traditional path, likely beginning royal duties after a period of military service.

But the direction taken by his younger siblings, Charlotte, 10, and Louis, seven, is less certain.

“William and Catherine are modern parents. They may have their thoughts, but I think they’ll wait to see what the children want to do,” a former senior aide told The i.

They added that the possibility of Charlotte and Louis building careers outside the monarchy has not been ruled out.

The question of the younger Wales children’s future comes as Prince William is preparing for a slimmed-down monarchy.

When he becomes King, the number of working royals is forecast to fall to around five or six.

This is half of today’s figure, and only a third of the number active during Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.

“William won’t have cousins helping him like the Queen [Elizabeth] did. So he’ll have to work smarter,” one royal source told the outlet.

Insiders expect that to mean shorter campaigns and collaborative charity initiatives, rather than every royal serving as patron of hundreds of organisations.

Under this plan, Princess Anne, who turned 75 on August 15, has indicated she is willing to continue with duties.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are also set to take on a more prominent role than in the past. Their children, however, will not join the royal payroll.

Similarly, Zara Tindall and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are not expected to serve as working royals under William’s reign.

The streamlined structure also excludes the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who stepped down from royal duties in 2020.

Their children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, will likewise have no role in the official working Royal Family.
