At the event, Hodgkinson was seen laughing alongside the Prince of Wales as she received the honour.

It was in those moments that William revealed his daughter's own love for athletics and appreciation for Hodgkinson.

"The prince told me his daughter is doing the 400m at the minute and the hurdles and that she did watch me in Paris," the athlete explained.

She continued: "He told me that he remembers me winning and that he wished he could be there to see it himself."

The Prince of Wales comments echoed his remarks about Princess Charlotte’s sporty nature in March.

"At weekends we go from one competition to the next," William revealed.

Charlotte is understood to be showing off her sporting prowess at school – also finding success in football, ballet, tap and rugby.

Herpassion for athleticism was confirmed by a palace insider, who noted: "She's clearly sporty like her mother. A bit of a mini-me."

Princess Charlotte turned 10 on May 2, which the Royal Family celebrated by sharing a sweet picture of the young royal in the hills of Cumbria.

In the heartwarming post, a beaming Charlotte was seen wearing a camouflage jacket with a hiking backpack and her hair tied back.

Hodgkinson became the first British track and field star to win Olympic gold since Sir Mo Farah in 2016.

The athlete's Paris triumph saw her upgrade from the silver medal she won at the Tokyo Olympics.

Hodgkinson had also defended her European title during what was an astonishing year for her career.

She became just the third British woman to claim the 800m Olympic title after Ann Packer and Kelly Holmes.

The honour was the latest award received by Hodgkinson, who was crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year in December.

Former Formula One driver Martin Brundle was also honoured at Windsor Castle on Tuesday.

Brundle, who has become known to a new wave of F1 fans through his grid interviews, received his OBE. He raced in Formula One from 1984 to 1996, achieving nine podium finishes.

He is now a regular fixture of F1 coverage, working with ITV, the BBC and Sky Sports since 2012.
