The Prince and Princess of Monaco tied the knot in 2011

Princess Charlene of Monaco's marriage to Prince Albert II is "much more complicated" behind the scenes, a royal historian has claimed.

The princess, who was born in Zimbabwe and spent much of her youth in South Africa, married the Prince of Monaco in 2011 in a lavish two-day ceremony.

Charlene and Albert's wedding was a fabulous affair, attended by celebrities like Naomi Campbell and British royals like Prince Edward and the Duchess of Edinburgh.

However, their marriage has been plagued by divorce rumours for many years, escalated by Charlene staying in South Africa away from her husband and two children for much of 2021, due to a severe ear, nose and throat infection.

The Princess of Monaco recently issued a statement to slap down the rumours.

She said: "There's nothing wrong with our marriage and I find the rumours to be draining and exhausting.

"I simply cannot understand where they come from.

"It feels to me like certain media or people want to see us split."

Dr Ed Owens, a royal historian, spoke exclusively to GB News to explain how difficult it is for Charlene to navigate these rumours.

He claimed: “It’s very difficult. I would compare them to the Crown Princess of Sweden as well regarding rumours about her marriage."

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden has had to address divorce rumours in the past, surrounding her 13-year marriage to Prince Daniel, Duke of Vastergotland.

Owens continued: “The problem with all of these Royal Families, is that they have these slap-up royal weddings, these big public royal weddings where they present themselves as symbolic of the national culture of family life or moral life.

“And then, of course, in many cases, what goes on behind closed doors is much more complicated."

He added: “So there's a key tension in relation to both the Monaco case and the Swedish case at the moment, around the fantasy of the family life that they want to project and the reality, which is much more complicated.”
