The Prince of Wales is expected to attend the FIFA World Cup to support England during the summer

Prince William has met with England head coach Thomas Tuchel ahead of the World Cup.

The Prince of Wales visited St George's Park in Burton-upon-Trent earlier this month for a private meeting with the backroom staff preparing England's men's team for the upcoming tournament.

William, who serves as patron of the Football Association, expressed his belief that the national side is edging closer to tournament success.

"All of the things are coming in a line now: the Lionesses' successes that they've had, two men's Euros finals, it kind of feels like we're closing in on that ambition," he declared, referencing England's pursuit of a first World Cup triumph in six decades.

During his visit, the prince met with coaches, tactical analysts, medical professionals, and sports science specialists who work behind the scenes.

"I just wanted to take the opportunity really to come and see the team behind the team today and say thank you, and good luck to all of you guys who don't get as much acknowledgement or credit as you deserve," William told the assembled staff.

He emphasised the crucial role they play, stating: "Not everyone gets to see all the hard work you put in but the entire success of the players comes from what you guys (do), from the foundations you built, so thank you."

William is expected to attend the FIFA World Cup at some stage in July, with the tournament taking place across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Before departing St George's Park, he offered his encouragement to the assembled staff.

"Go with my blessings and my best wishes to all of you. Enjoy it. Look after each other, and give it your best. I'm sure we will do well," he said, pressing his hands together in prayer as he added: "Good luck."

Following the announcement of Thomas Tuchel’s appointment in 2024, the Prince of Wales took to social media to share his reaction to the news.

William wrote: "Exciting times for @England, with a generation of talented players and a new manager taking the reins.

"Thomas, wishing you the best of luck, we’re all behind you! W".

Tuchel is a highly regarded coach, with the crowning moment of his career coming as the manager of the London-based club Chelsea.

The German led Chelsea to victory in the Champions League in 2021 despite them being underdogs against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the final.
