The Prince of Wales is next in line to the British throne

Prince William has a “special responsibility” towards the late Queen’s “most significant legacy.”

A royal commentator has said that, in his position as heir to the throne, the Prince of Wales has a responsibility to attend public engagements amidst media criticism about Kate’s photo blunder.

Prince William’s attendance at the Commonwealth Day Service earlier this week was “essential” because the King did not attend as he continues cancer treatment.

The Princess of Wales has taken the blame for editing a photo that the couple posted on their Instagram for Mother’s Day.

The picture was removed from all major international photography platforms after editing issues were spotted.

Richard Fitzwilliams said: “Prince William, as heir to the throne, has a very special responsibility.

“In the absence of the King and of Catherine, it was essential that he attended the Commonwealth Day Service in Westminster Abbey with Queen Camilla.

“Although it is not automatic, he is likely to succeed King Charles as its head and it is the Queen’s most significant legacy.”

The Prince of Wales attended the event alongside the Queen, Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

However, both the King and Princess Kate did not attend amidst their health concerns.

Following the prince’s appearance at Westminster Abbey, William brushed off the photo scandal to celebrate the launch of the new Earthshot Prize platform.

Fitzwilliams continued: “The evening function for his Earthshot Prize, a global environmental award which seeks game-changing solutions to help combat climate change, was the second such event recently which gives a boost to this truly remarkable prize.

“He knows that his presence and that of Catherine, when she is able to resume royal engagements, has a unique cachet.”

The Prince of Wales made his second appearance of the day to meet with global investors, philanthropists and Earthshot innovators to launch a new funding platform.

The mother-of-three has faced heavy criticism for editing the family photo but Fitzwilliams believes that the princess deserves support amidst her recovery from abdominal surgery.

He said: “This is an extremely difficult time for the royal family and the last couple of days has seen a ferocious hounding of the Princess of Wales, despite her apology for editing the Mothering Day photo.

“She has been seriously ill, having been in hospital for nearly a fortnight for abdominal surgery.

“There are obvious public relations lessons to be learnt from this, but she surely deserves our support.”

The princess took to social media to apologise after the edits stating: "Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused.

"I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C."

But the anti-monarchy group Republic is demanding further action to release the original photograph claiming that the princess’s apology “doesn’t explain anything.”
