The Prince of Wales posted a touching tribute to the World Cup winner on social media

Prince William has attended the funeral of Manchester United and England legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

Thousands of members of the public have lined the streets as Manchester mourns the World Cup winner.


Sir Bobby died on October 21 2023 aged 86.

Following the news of the sporting icon's death, the Prince of Wales posted a touching tribute on social media.

Prince William wrote on X: "Sir Bobby Charlton. First Division Champion. European Champion. World Champion. Gentleman. Legend.

"A true great who will be remembered forever. Thank you Sir Bobby. W".

Prince William is the President of the Football Association (FA).

The Prince of Wales has held the position since 2006.


Sir Bobby died five days after a fall at a care home, an inquest heart.

A coroner's document states seen by PA news agency read: "Retired Manchester United legendary footballer Sir Bobby Charlton was admitted to Macclesfield Hospital at the age of 86 following a fall at his care home on 16 October 2023.

"He sustained rib fractures as he stood up and fell against a window sill due to being unsteady on his feet.

Prince William is the President of the Football Association (FA).

"He had resided at The Willows since July 2023 initially for respite and last two months of life.

"He continued to mobilise as usual following the fall until it was noted that he had swelling to his back.

"He was examined by the home's GP and transported to hospital where he was placed on end-of-life care and sadly passed away on 21 October 2023 at 03:50 hours."
