The Prince of Wales is Patron of the Football Association

Prince William discussed Princess Charlotte's enthusiasm for football during the investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on Wednesday.

During the honours event, the Prince of Wales presented Kerry Davis with an MBE for her contributions to association football and diversity in sport.

Ms Davis made history as the first black woman to represent England's women's football team.

She revealed to PA that her conversation with the prince touched on the young princess's involvement in the sport.

"When I was at school it was netball, rounders, there was no football," Ms Davis said, reflecting on how dramatically opportunities for girls have changed.

Ms Davis's international career spanned 16 years, beginning with her debut in September 1982 and encompassing major tournaments including the 1984 European Championships and the 1995 World Cup.

Across 90 appearances for England, she netted 43 goals, a tally that still places her third on the Lionesses' all-time scoring list.

Speaking about the current state of women's football, she told PA that "the women's, the girls' game is probably 100 years behind the men's game" regarding available opportunities.

Ms Davis emphasised that diverse role models and an increase in female coaches are essential for broadening representation within the sport.

Sports commentator Clive Tyldesley was also presented with a CBE by the Prince of Wales, where the pair discussed William's beloved Aston Villa ahead of their upcoming European final.

Speaking to the PA following the honour for services to sports broadcasting and charity, Mr Tyldesley praised the authenticity of the heir to the throne's footballing allegiances.

"There's nothing manufactured about his love for his football team," he said, describing William's support for the Birmingham-based club as "a genuine link between the (Royal) Family and the national sport".

England rugby captain Zoe Stratford received recognition at the ceremony, collecting an OBE for services to rugby union football following her leadership of the Red Roses to World Cup glory last year.

Ms Stratford described the honour as "a really proud moment" and reflected on the tournament's significance, telling PA it was "such an amazing but crucial time for women's sport".

She highlighted how the victory enabled her squad to forge connections with younger supporters and draw them towards rugby.

"I think that's such a massive thing that we got right as the Red Roses," she said, noting that attendance figures and participation levels have risen substantially since the triumph.
