The bodies were recovered off the coast of Brighton beach yesterday

Three women who were found dead off the coast of Brighton beach have been identified by Sussex Police as "aged 20 to 30 years old".

The force added that investigators have a "number of hypotheses" about how the three died.

The women's bodies, all of whom are understood to be between the ages of 20 and 30, were recovered yesterday.

Emergency services first responded to reports of concern for a person in the water at around 5.45am on Wednesday morning before the three were pulled from the sea.

Officers swarmed Black Rock car park, which is just off Madeira Drive, and were assisted by a helicopter and two lifeboats.

During the emergency response, coastguards were also deployed to the water, accompanied by a large police presence on the shore.

Following an investigation into the incident, Sussex Police announced they believe they have identified all three women.

Next of kin of all three have been informed and formal identification procedures are now underway.

The investigation into how the women came to be in the water.

Police have requested for the public to exercise patience while full facts into the sensitive investigation are established.

The findings will be shared with the public "as soon as (the police) are able".

Chief Superintendent Adam Hays said: "This is an utterly heartbreaking tragedy, and my thoughts are with the loved ones of these three young women after their devastating loss.

"They will remain at the forefront of our minds as we search for the answers their families, and the wider public, desperately seek.

"This is a sensitive investigation that includes a number of hypotheses, and it would not be appropriate to speculate as we to continue to gather evidence.

"I would once again ask for the public’s patience while we establish the full facts, which will be shared publicly as soon as we are able."

Anyone with information has been asked to contact police online or via 101, quoting Operation Ledmore.

Reacting to the tragedy, local MP Peter Kyle said the incident was a "sobering and heartbreaking reminder" what families, neighbours and communities are what is important.

"We will all be working with emergency services, tourism services and the seafront office to further promote messages about the risks around water,” the Hove and Portslade MP said yesterday.

"Our seafront is one of the many jewels in the crown of our city but the sea can be a risk. However, for tonight I shall only be thinking about the families and friends affected by this tragedy."
