The Earthshot Prize ambassador was visibly amused at the unexpected royal message

Prince William surprised listeners of BBC Radio 2's Scott Mills Breakfast Show this morning with an unexpected voicemail during an interview with Australian conservationist Robert Irwin.

The message arrived whilst Irwin was serving as the programme's "resident wildlife expert", fielding questions from young listeners about topics ranging from tiger teeth to global elephant populations.

Mills introduced the royal message casually, telling Irwin he had "one more voicenote" to play.

Neither the presenter nor his guest anticipated hearing from Prince William, who opened his message with a cheerful "Good morning, Scott, or should I say G'day, Scott?"

The prince praised Irwin as a "brilliant ambassador for the Earthshot Prize" and apologised for not being able to join them in person.

He extended an invitation to Mills for the upcoming Earthshot Prize ceremony in Rio de Janeiro this November, describing it as "a fantastic event, great show".

William then issued a playful warning to the BBC presenter: "Just beware Scott, that Robert likes to pull random terrifying animals and creatures out of his pockets while he's on anyone's show and talking to them.
