The Prince and Princess of Wales have said they are 'shocked and saddened' by the tragic event

Prince William and Princess Kate have issued a statement following the Sydney attack that saw a knifeman stab six people to death.

The Prince and Princess of Wales said they are "shocked and saddened" by the tragic event and are sending their thoughts.

The couple wrote on X: "We are shocked and saddened by the terrible events in Sydney earlier today.

"Our thoughts are with all those affected, including the loved ones of those lost and the heroic emergency responders who risked their own lives to save others. W & C."

Six people were killed and multiple others were injured at an Australian shopping centre in Sydney.

The 40-year-old man was shot dead by police at Westfield Bondi Junction.

Eight victims, including a nine-month-old baby, were rushed to hospital as paramedics hurried to the scene.

The mall went into lockdown shortly before 4pm local time as hundreds rushed to exit the premises, with the police declaring a "major incident".

The Prince and Princess of Wales praised the "heroic emergency responders who risked their own lives to save others."

A New South Wales police inspector was hailed as a hero after she shot dead the man who stabbed six people.

Anthony Albanese, the prime minister of Australia, said "there is no doubt that she saved lives through her action."

A nine-month-old baby was also seriously injured in the attack and is being treated at hospital for “a paediatric stab wound."

The statement marks the first time the public has heard from the princess since she announced her cancer diagnosis in March.

However, the Prince of Wales was seen with his son, Prince George, watching a football match in Birmingham.

He was also spotted out with his mother-in-law, Carole Middleton, at a North Norfolk pub.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have currently stepped back from public-facing duties as Kate continues preventative chemotherapy.
