Prince William walked out with players and greeted them on the pitch as he attended Saturday's FA Cup final in London.

The final will be contested between Crystal Palace and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium.

As patron of the Football Association, Prince William will present the winning team with the FA Cup trophy.

He adopted the role, inherited from his late grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, last summer after serving as FA president for 18 years.

To reach the final, Manchester City cruised to a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in their semi-final match in April.

Crystal Palace inflicted a hammer blow on William's own beloved Aston Villa on their journey to Wembley - with the Birmingham-based club being trounced 3-0 in the other FA Cup semi-final.

Prince William would have been hoping that Aston Villa would overcome Palace, as the Prince of Wales and his son, Prince George, are devoted Aston Villa fans.

Villa's painful FA Cup exit came less than two weeks after Prince William and Prince George watched on as their team were knocked out of the Champions League.

Prince William and Prince George attended both the first leg in Paris and the second leg in Birmingham of Aston Villa's quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

Villa won the second leg at Villa Park 3-2 but lost the tie 4-5 on aggregate after suffering a 3-1 defeat in France.

The exit from the Champions League and the FA Cup in the space of a fortnight ended Aston Villa's hopes of winning their first trophy since 1996.

Aston Villa's season could still end in success, as the Birmingham-based club battles to secure a place in next season's Champions League.

The club are currently fifth in the Premier League with the top five teams gaining entry into the Champions League.

If Aston Villa finish lower than fifth in the Premier League, they will be rewarded with a spot in the Europa League, with an additional Europa League place being awarded to the winners of the FA Cup if they finish outside the top six positions in the Premier League.

Manchester City are on track to secure Champions League qualification but will need to gain four points from their final two Premier League matches to be certain of their place in European football's premium club competition.

The Prince of Wales also attended last season's FA Cup final between Manchester United and Manchester City.

William will have been buoyed by his team's 2-0 victory over north London's Tottenham Hotspur on Friday.

Despite Manchester City being the favourites, Manchester United secured a 2-1 win in the derby match.

Crystal Palace, who have never won a major trophy in their history, will be hoping to inflict back-to-back FA Cup final defeats on Manchester City.
