The Welsh performer starred in a number of big-name series

Welsh actor Owain Rhys Davies, best known for portraying Agent Wilson in David Lynch's Twin Peaks: The Return, has died at the age of 44, his family confirmed today.

The performer passed away suddenly last week, with his brother Rhodri and father Conway sharing the devastating news via social media.

In their statement, the family acknowledged that the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, though they believe he died peacefully.

"While there are still questions that remain unanswered regarding the circumstances of his death, our understanding at this stage is that Owain passed suddenly, naturally, and peacefully," Rhodri wrote.

The announcement described the news as coming as "a great shock to many," noting that the reach of Mr Davies' "love, friendship, and generosity was vast."

Beyond his television work, Mr Davies built an impressive stage career in London's West End, appearing in productions of Mamma Mia!, The Wizard of Oz, By Jeeves, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at the Royal National Theatre.

His screen credits extended beyond Twin Peaks, too, with roles in Netflix's The OA, the 2016 fantasy film Alice Through the Looking Glass, and the 2019 horror comedy A Serial Killer's Guide to Life on his CV.

The actor also featured in the 2017 Disney romantic comedy The Relationtrip and the series Impact Winter.

His brother's tribute described how Mr Davies had forged "extraordinary, family-like bonds with many of his closest friends, colleagues, and loved ones."

"I am incredibly proud that, while he was my brother, he was also a brother to so many others," he wrote.

The family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming response they had received since sharing the news, calling the messages "deeply moving and a testament to the impact he had on so many lives."

They confirmed plans to release further details as arrangements progress, whilst requesting space to process their grief.

"We kindly ask for some privacy as we come to terms with this devastating loss and support one another through the days ahead," the statement concluded.

Friends, fans and colleagues have responded with an outpouring of grief following the announcement.

Downton Abbey actress Joanne Froggatt described herself as "devastated," writing: "He was more than a friend, he was joy and life and talent and kindness and fun and intelligence. What I would give for one more hug. You're forever in our hearts cariad."

Coronation Street's Hayley Tamaddon recalled how Mr Davies "lit up every room he went into," sharing fond memories of time spent together in Los Angeles.

Scottish actress Ruth Connell called him "the funniest, kindest, silliest" person with "an enormous heart."

Welcome to Wrexham star Humphrey Ker remembered his friend as "a gentleman and a wally and a talent and a giver and maker of joy."
