GB News Royal Correspondent offers his insights into the Prince of Wales's comments at the Baftas

Prince William has said he is not in a "calm state" - comments splashed across many newspapers this morning.

I was there in the room when he said it, and I think it is important to provide some context.

The prince was asked by Bafta officials whether he had seen the film Hamnet, which won Best British Film at the star-studded award ceremony last night.

It is a real tearjerker about the death of Shakespeare's son, earning Jessie Buckley the Leading Actress gong for her role as Hamnet's bereaved mother.

Prince William admitted he hadn't seen it, telling the group it left his wife in "floods of tears".

“I need to be in quite a calm state and I’m not at the moment,” he added.

In the context of last week's arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, currently eighth in line to the throne, it is no wonder Prince William feels on edge.

It is impossible to say whether the police investigation into his uncle is the sole cause of his not so calm state, but I suspect it could be a part of it.

This, adding to the weight of being future king and supporting his ailing father, will only add to the pressure.

Despite all this, the Prince and Princess of Wales put on brave faces, celebrating the best of British talent and creativity.

It is a passion they both share, and William has been President of Bafta for sixteen years.

I understand there is no change to their official programme following Andrew's arrest, but Prince William is deeply concerned about the situation.

He supports the King's statement on Thursday: no one (even a former prince) is above the law.

The future King has never been close to his uncle.

This was evident when he was forced to stand next to him outside Westminster Cathedral for the Duchess of Kent's funeral last year.

Prince William looked visibly uncomfortable, and refused to start a conversation with Andrew - who attempted a number of times.

Andrew was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public office, relating to alleged actions when he was UK trade envoy between 2001 and 2011.

He has always denied wrongdoing, and has been released under investigation.

Andrew has not been charged with an offence.

When his uncle started his trade envoy position, William was a university student in his early 20's.

The prince then embarked on military training, and became a search and rescue helicopter pilot.

He was still a relatively junior member of the Royal Family, despite his royal destiny, becoming the Duke of Cambridge when he married Catherine in 2011.

In other words, it is very unlikely he would have been privy to any private concerns royal aides may have had about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's alleged conduct.

However, tough questions are now being asked of the monarchy about who knew what, and when.

For the Prince and Princess of Wales, the future King and Queen, I suspect they will want the public to judge them on their own actions and values.

I understand Prince William plans to change the monarchy when the time comes.

Let's see if the British public continue to support William and Catherine as they ride out the storm.
