A royal expert has revealed that Prince Philip had a revealing nickname for Meghan Markle and "couldn't get away from" striking similarities between Meghan and a different Duchess.

According to royal biographer Ingrid Seward, Meghan reminded Philip of The Duchess of Windsor and he nicknamed her "DOW."

The Duchess of Windsor became one of the most controversial figures in modern royal history after Edward VIII decided to abdicate in December 1936 to be able to marry her

During their years of exile, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor continued to attract headlines - and, most damagingly, visited Nazi Germany in 1937 where they met Adolf Hitler and were photographed giving the notorious Nazi salute.

Speaking on GB News Seward said: "I think that Prince Philip was very canny about people and he didn't always see bad in people, he often tried to see the good in them.

"He just could not get away from the similarities between Meghan and Harry and Edward and Ms Simpson, which his why he used to call her the Duchess of Windsor. Not to her face though, he used to call her DOW."

The royal biographer also spoke about the relationship between Philip and the now-King Charles, saying that he would have been "very proud of him."

She explained: "He would totally agree with the slimmed-down monarchy. He would be very proud of his son.

"He was not always proud of his son, He was a very tough father. They didn't get along in the early years.

"Obviously, they did in later life, I do think that he would be very proud of the way that Charles has immediately implemented what he said he was going to do.

"He said that he was going to have a slimmed-down monarchy and that is what he has organised, that is what he has now got.

"It is a little bit too slimmed down at the moment perhaps, he is coping though. He just doesn't want the burden of too many royals upon the British taxpayer."

Prince Philip passed away three years ago today at the age of 99 years old.

He died at Windsor Castle, and was the longest serving royal consort in history.

In the years since Philip's death, Charles has honoured one of his late father and mother's pledges by granting his youngest brother, Prince Edward, Philip's former title.

It was announced by Buckingham Palace last year that Edward had become the Duke of Edinburgh, which was previously held by Philip.

The granting of the Dukedom of Edinburgh to Edward means that Sophie is now known as the Duchess of Edinburgh.

It had long been known that Edward would one day become the Duke of Edinburgh after a pledge made by the late Queen and Philip on his wedding day in June 1999.
