The Duke of Sussex admitted he ‘considered’ becoming a US citizen in a recent interview

Prince Harry ‘will not twist the knife’ in the Royal Family as ‘future hangs in balance,’ according to a royal author.

During a recent interview with Good Morning America, the Duke of Sussex revealed that he had “considered” becoming a US citizen, but it is not a “high priority” for him.

Christopher Andersen, author of The King: The Life of Charles III, has said that there is no reason why Prince Harry would seek US citizenship amidst tensions between him and his family.

Harry’s relationship with his family has been strained since Harry’s Netflix series documenting his exit from the Royal Family and his tell-all memoir Spare.

Andersen said: “There is really no earthly reason why, after being accused of turning his back on his family and his country, Harry would want to twist the knife by seeking US citizenship.

"That would only distance himself further from his British roots and provoke a response from the palace. It would only anger the British public and exacerbate matters at a time when Harry’s father is battling cancer and the fate of the monarchy is hanging in the balance.”

The Duke of Sussex travelled to the UK earlier this month to visit his father, the King, following his cancer diagnosis but only stayed for one day and did not see the Prince or Princess of Wales during his visit.

Anderson told Fox News Digital: "Forget about whether the US would ultimately demand that Harry renounce his titles.

"It’s much more likely that King Charles would face pressure to strip Harry of his royal titles if he chose to become a US citizen. And it’s difficult to see the upside of Harry becoming a US citizen.”

According to the US Citizen and Immigration Service, if Harry was to become a US citizen he would have to renounce his titles as it states: “Any applicant who has any titles of heredity or positions of nobility in any foreign state must renounce the title or the position.”

Anderson questioned what the upsides of changing his citizenship would be for Harry asking: “What’s in it for him?

“Why would he further alienate himself from the rest of the royals? Harry says he loves living in America, but that’s not the same as saying he loves America. It was clear that Harry was blindsided when he was asked that question."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex already stopped using their HRH titles in an agreement with the late Queen Elizabeth II when they stepped down as working royals.

The duchess was understood to have started applying for her UK citizenship after she married the prince, but did not complete it and remains a US citizen.

Royal broadcaster, Ian Pelham Turner also told Fox News that Harry’s title as prince has opened up partnership opportunities for him to advocate for British people.

Turner said: "I would feel let down if Harry took American citizenship because, in his charity roles, he has been a stalwart advocate for British people who have difficulties in life."
