The adaptation represents the latest scripted venture for the Sussexes' production outfit

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are adapting a harrowing memoir about the Afghanistan War to the screen through their production company, Archewell.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are developing a Netflix feature film based on "No Way Out: The Searing True Story of Men Under Siege," written by Major Adam Jowett about his command of Easy Company during a brutal 21-day siege in Helmand Province.

Matt Charman, who received an Oscar nomination for penning the Steven Spielberg-directed thriller "Bridge of Spies" starring Tom Hanks, has been tapped to write the screenplay.

The project falls under Archewell's first-look arrangement with the streaming giant, which replaced their previous overall deal last year.

Jowett's account chronicles the experiences of a hastily assembled and undermanned force comprising Paras and Royal Irish Rangers during the summer of 2006.

The soldiers were ordered to defend the District Centre of Musa Qala regardless of the cost, finding themselves isolated in a dilapidated compound while vastly outnumbered by Taliban fighters surrounding the town.

Throughout the memoir, Jowett captures the intensity and disorder of combat as enemy forces launched repeated assaults against his position.

The major recounts bearing responsibility for his troops as they mounted a heroic defence across three weeks of unrelenting, exhausting warfare.

As ammunition dwindled and the company faced what appeared to be certain death, the siege reached an unexpected turning point.

Pan Macmillan released the book in 2019.

The project holds particular significance for Harry, who completed two tours of active duty in Afghanistan, including service in Helmand Province where the siege took place.

Harry, Meghan and Tracy Ryerson, Archewell's head of scripted content, will serve as producers on the film.

Critics have drawn comparisons between Jowett's narrative and acclaimed war films such as "Black Hawk Down" and "The Bridge on the River Kwai," describing it as an emotionally powerful story.

The adaptation represents the latest scripted venture for the Sussexes' production outfit, which has faced considerable scrutiny regarding its Netflix partnership.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria addressed the speculation earlier this year, stating: "We still have a relationship with them. We have movies in development with them."

Bajaria added that the couple have projects in development across both television and film, noting that deals regularly conclude without attracting media attention because "there's no juicy story there."

Beyond the Afghanistan adaptation, Archewell is producing a screen version of "The Wedding Date" with Tracey Oliver writing the script, whilst also working on an adaptation of Carley Fortune's novel "Meet Me At The Lake."

On the television front, the Sussexes are developing a polo-centred drama penned by Francisca X. Hu in collaboration with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage's Fake Empire.
