The non-profit declared they had been "hugely humbled" by the move

Prince Harry has made a "significant donation" to the Nottingham based charity Himmah.

The undisclosed sum from the Duke of Sussex has come five years after his wife, Meghan Markle, gave £10,000 from The Royal Foundation to the “social justice” non-profit.

Himmah’s mission statement is to tackle poverty, racism and social exclusion in the Nottingham area. It also runs the city’s largest independent food bank.

The city became Harry and Meghan's first official visit soon after their engagement in December 2017.

Writing to the charity along with his donation, Harry said: “Nottingham holds a special place in my heart, having had the privilege of visiting and supporting the community there for over a decade.

“The incredible work Himmah does to address food insecurity, poverty and social exclusion should be recognised and applauded.

I’m happy to be able to play a small part in your mission to bring communities together by creating opportunities and support for those facing hardship,” he penned.

Himmah have said the Duke’s gift will be used to provide 650 food parcels to in need familes around Nottingham.

The charity's director, Sajid Mohammed, celebrated the surprise move four years after Meghan’s own donation – explaining the group was left feeling “hugely humbled”.

"To have been chosen by such a high-profile royal once is amazing, but to have been supported by Prince Harry too left us completely gobsmacked and hugely humbled,” he said.

Mohamed glowed that the Duke had demonstrated "genuine compassion and care" for people in Nottingham with his latest gesture.

"It really touched the trustees, the volunteers, our service users and staff, that ordinary people like us are supported by some of the world's most important people.

"It was a life-changing amount of money to people in the city of Nottingham,” he told the BBC.

Maghan’s original donation was used to fund and procure equipment for the Salaam Shalom Kitchen, an inter-faith Muslim and Jewish community project that provides essentials and hot meals.

Speaking at the time, Mohamed revealed: “For ages I thought the whole thing was a hoax!”

“They kept emailing me and ringing me about the donation saying it was from the Duchess of Sussex and I just couldn’t believe it.”

The charity director similarly shared how humbled his team was that Meghan “knew about our charity and wanted to support us”.

“It’s an absolutely incredible sum and we’re so very grateful,” he celebrated at the time.

Explaining Himmah’s role in the city, Mohammed added: “The number of people in need in Nottingham shot up during Covid and has only gotten worse as more people suffer the cost-of-living crisis and others lose their jobs due to the cost-of-business crisis.

“Many of our service users are working people who are struggling to make ends meet and unable to afford the basics, like fresh produce, toilet roll or toothpaste.

“Government grant and bid opportunities have declined and competition for the funds is fierce, meaning we’re increasingly dependent on community giving and so grateful for every penny our supporters provide.

Himmah’s work is not just about providing food – it’s about restoring dignity, hope and stability to people’s lives,” he concluded.
