The ex-Duke of York vowed to 'put his duty to his family and country first' as he confirmed the relinquishing of his titles

Angela Levin has delivered her scathing verdict on Prince Andrew's statement on giving up his royal titles, declaring the announcement "patronising".

Speaking to GB News, the Royal Biographer told host Nana Akua said the disgraced royal's confirmation of his titles being removed was "awful".

In a Buckingham Palace statement, Andrew said: "In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family."

"I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life."

Discussing the statement on GB News, Mrs Levin said: "I think it was just too much and he [King Charles] wanted to do something. He rang from Scotland to speak to him.

"Usually the Royal Family are very slow thinking about things for months on end, but this time he was very angry. William is very angry and you can't have someone who is so obviously a liar."

Detailing what has "annoyed" her most about the decision to relinquish Prince Andrew's titles, Mrs Levin claimed there is a possibility they could be "reinstated" in the future.

She explained: "The thing that actually has annoyed me very much is that they're not actually just cutting him out, the title Duke of York and the Knight of Garter are just being put to one side.

"It's not wiped out, so it's still there, which I'm sure they won't, but they could actually put back again. And I think that's just being too easy.

"The reason they say they don't want to do it is to save Parliament time, but actually I think they should sweep it out altogether, because they've had enough of it."

Criticising Andrew's statement further, the royal biographer hit out at his "patronising" pledge to put "duty to his family and country first".

She fumed: "Actually it also annoyed me when he said 'I will do as I always do, put my duty to my family and country first'. Now that's extremely patronising, isn't it?

"He's absolutely upset everybody and most of them have found it very ghastly, the whole thing. He's sort of being very patronising even now, not saying 'I know this is terrible, I know I've upset everybody, it's not like that'.

"He's still so superior and full of himself, which I think is absolutely awful."

Highlighting the impact on Prince Andrew's ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, who also loses her Duchess of York title, Mrs Levin said the ex-Duchess will be "very upset" by the ordeal.

She concluded: "She would be very upset about that because she liked that, because she liked the level that it put her in the country, the work did make her feel good. But at least she has done it quickly to say, well, I'm going to do that, she hasn't made a fuss."

Prince Andrew has always strongly denied the allegations made against him by Ms Giuffre.
