Andrew's suggestion will see him live apart from Sarah Ferguson for the first time in 18 years

Prince Andrew has requested to make Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's former UK base of Frogmore Cottage his new home, according to a source.

The disgraced royal was initially offered the residency in January 2023 when Harry and Meghan were told to leave the cottage, but turned it down as he refused to leave Royal Lodge.

However, with Andrew and Sarah Ferguson set to leave the 30-room mansion, the King's brother is eyeing up Frogmore.

The pair will live apart for the first time since 2008, with Fergie hoping to move to Adelaide Cottage which is set to be vacated next month by Prince William and Princess Kate.

The King has long wanted his brother to move out of Royal Lodge, having not paid rent on the property for 22 years.

Andrew holds a lease on the property until 2078, having made an initial payment of £1million for the residency and contributing £7.5million towards renovations finalised in 2005, according to a National Audit Office report.

Neither property for Andrew nor Ms Ferguson would require renovations paid by the taxpayer, with them lying on the Windsor Castle security perimeter.

Talks are currently ongoing about how much rent Andrew and Fergie would be charged.

A friend of the pair told The Sun: "Andy is willing to leave, but these are his demands.

"He is realistic and knows the writing is on the wall and that his time at Royal Lodge is up.

"If he must go, then he has asked for Frogmore Cottage. Incredibly, Sarah has said she wants Adelaide Cottage."

Frogmore Cottage is one of the more modest options, with its two homes that have been knocked into one, featuring five bedrooms, four bathrooms and a nursery.

Meghan and Harry were given the Grade II-listed home as a wedding present from the late Queen in 2018.

The pair spent £2.4million of taxpayers' money on the renovations, before paying it back.

The renovations included underfloor heating, a copper bath, vegan paint and a garden BBQ.

The pair moved out in 2020 and were evicted by the King three years later.

With Fergie seeking a move to Adelaide Cottage, the pair will only be around the corner from each other on the Windsor estate.

The source added: "Sarah and Andy have lived together at Royal Lodge since 2008 despite being divorced and seen like they are still a married couple.

"It's incredible that they are willing to go their own separate ways. But it indicates that they have been under immense strain this year and need a break from one another. It's a fresh start for both.

"Frogmore Cottage is too small for both, and Adelaide Cottage is around the corner, so they will see each other whenever they want.

"Both have space for their daughters, Eugenie and Beatrice, and their families to visit."
