Melania Trump did "not break royal protocol" by not curtsying to Princess Kate or Queen Camilla, a royal commentator has claimed.
Royal historian Marlene Koenig explained why this wasn’t a breach of etiquette, saying: "It's not customary for Americans or indeed people from countries where King Charles is not the sovereign to curtsy or bow."
She added that this tradition goes back to the American Revolution, continuing to tell Hello!: "The Declaration of Independence states that 'all men are created equal'.
"The nation was founded on rejecting the notion that some people are born into a higher status, meaning that acts of subservience like curtsying or bowing do not adhere to their core values."

King Charles and Queen Camilla are hosting President Trump and his wife from September 16 to 18, an unprecedented second state visit following their first in 2019.
After the formal welcome, the Trumps joined King Charles, Queen Camilla, and the Prince and Princess of Wales for a carriage ride through the Windsor estate before a lunch in the state dining room.
The couple then visited St George’s Chapel to lay a wreath at Queen Elizabeth II’s tomb, followed by a guided tour of the chapel and a performance by the chapel choir.
The evening will end with a white-tie state banquet at Windsor Castle, hosting more than 160 guests on Wednesday night.

Melania Trump showcased a classic tailored style as she arrived in Windsor for a state visit with President Donald Trump.
The couple, holding hands, were welcomed by Prince William and Princess Kate for a two-day trip that began with a royal salute fired simultaneously from Windsor Castle and the Tower of London.
Staying loyal to her go-to French fashion house, Mrs Trump wore a Christian Dior Haute Couture dark grey suit with a high neckline and a cinched waist, paired with matching dark grey suede pumps.
She added a bold touch of colour with an elegant violet wool hat.
LATEST ROYAL NEWS:
This is not the first time Mrs Trump has turned to Dior for a major occasion.
When she and the President landed at London’s Stansted Airport on Tuesday, she wore a sand-colored, double-breasted Burberry coat with a turned-up collar over a black blouse and sleek, knee-high Dior Empreinte riding boots.
Earlier this year, for President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress in Washington, DC, she wore a $5,500 caviar grey Dior tweed suit designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri.
The outfit, from Dior's fall 2024 collection, featured a belted jacket and pencil skirt with a scarf-like accent tucked into a black belt.
Her stylist, Herve Pierre, described it "as a nice way to mix business and femininity. It’s appropriate for the occasion."
