Royal commentator Charles Rae has criticised the Sussexes after a show of eco “hypocrisy”.

The Sun’s former royal correspondent took aim at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry after their decision to use a seven-car convoy for a 200ft journey.

The pair were flanked by New York Police Department patrol cars as they headed to the World Mental Health Day Festival for a talk.

The couple have previously spoken out on the need to tackle the climate crisis, but will have done their carbon footprint no favours with the short trip.

Speaking on GB News, Rae branded the pair “clowns” in a scathing rant.

He told Patrick Christys: “It’s an utter farce. This is a seven-car convoy who had to travel 200ft. It is absolutely ridiculous.

“We all know what happened in May when they claimed they had an ‘almost catastrophic’ car chase, which turned out not to be true.

“We keep on hearing these two about the planet, the climate and everything else, and yet they take seven cars to this event.

“In contrast, we have the Prince and Princess of Wales turning up at a similar event in Birmingham and guess what? They didn’t need a seven car convoy.”

Pressed by Patrick Christys over the couple being a “target” and the police potentially taking the decision out of their hands, Rae argued that only three cars were necessary.

“There is no justification for seven vehicles”, he commented.

Christys then suggested the couple could be guilty of “hypocrisy” given their past commitments to tackling the issue of climate change.

Harry previously noted climate change as one of the “most pressing issues” facing mankind, telling Oprah Winfrey during the couple’s 2021 interview with the host that he wanted to make the issue one of his top priorities.

In 2022 he urged countries to take action at the United Nations, saying “our world is on fire”.

The couple have drawn criticism for their modes of transport, often using private jets for journeys despite their commitment to reach net zero by the end of the decade.

Rae praised the couple for appearing at the event as they spoke out on the issue of mental health, saying it is “important” they did so.

He then told Patrick Christys that most of the flights they make are “not important”, dubbing them “clowns from Montecito” as he lashed out at their travel arrangements.

Harry and Meghan were making their first trip to New York after their “near catastrophic” car chase in May, which came after they attended the Women of Vision awards.

A spokesman for the couple at the time said they were the victims of a “relentless pursuit lasting more than two hours”, with the “highly aggressive paparazzi” determined to chase them down.

New York Police subsequently told NBC that the scene was “a bit chaotic”, but denied it was “near catastrophic”.
