Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are on the invitation list for the King's Coronation in the spring, but will not be seated in a prominent position, according to insiders.
The estranged couple have been earmarked for an appearance by King Charles as he seeks to reconcile with his son.
The seating plan is expected to leave the Sussexes frustrated with "precedence" given to working members of the Royal Family, according to a royal historian.
The late Queen is said to have devised the plan which would seat Harry and Meghan in the second row, next to those lower down in the line of succession, if they were to attend the event.
Royal historian Cindy McCreery told the Express: “The focus will be on the vertical line of succession.
“Precedence will be given to William, Kate, George and his siblings.”

A Whitehall source claims the plans in mind are a deliberate attempt to reduce any risk of possible “drama”.
“They’re on the list and planning is well underway to make sure the proceedings run as smooth as possible - without any drama”, they said.
The couple have made a multitude of claims about the Royal Family following their decision to step back from frontline royal duties at the start of 2020.
The couple are now said to be attempting to carve out a future brand which does not involve public attacks against the Royal Family.

Following the release of Harry’s book, ‘Spare’, he told ITV: “Now we can focus on looking forward, and I’m excited about that.”
The headline-grabbing autobiography includes claims that the Prince of Wales physically attacked him, and that the King put his own interests above Harry’s and was jealous of the Duchess of Sussex and the Princess of Wales.
Attending the King’s Coronation is likely to be seen by the couple as a potentially important task in securing a less controversial future, one which involves potential reconciliation with the Royal Family.
Royal commentator Afua Hagan told the Express: “Attending the Coronation is the first step on the road to reconciliation.”
