Michael Cole said the couple's claims of press intrusion were essentially trivial and all sizzle and no steak

A former top royal correspondent has launched a blistering attack on the Duke and Dutchess of Sussex, accusing them of "whinging and whining" in their new Netflix series.

Michael Cole said the couple's claims of press intrusion were "essentially trivial" and "all sizzle and no steak."

In an interview with GB News, the former BBC Royal Correspondent said the couple had lost perspective and had nothing to complain about compared to normal people's problems.

"When you think about these two people in their hilltop fortress in California, lovely looking people, both of them. Beautiful children, healthy.

"They've got all the money in the World. Cars. People who want to see them, smile at them, say yes to them. What on earth have they got to worry about.

"Two time zones away from where we're sitting here in London, there's a terrible war going on. People are being murdered, raped, and don't know where they're going to go for their food and their heat.

"In this country, there are people afraid to turn on the central heating because they don't think they can pay the bill.

"If these people can't be decent to each other. If they can't be respectable to each other, why should we respect them.

"It's not a good look, whingeing and whining."

Having covered the couple's wedding, the former royal correspondent said he believed there was no orchestrated campaign against them.

"The coverage was universally positive. She was welcomed as a breath of fresh air, that was the phrase that kept being used.

"In Windsor Great Park people stood twelve-deep to welcome them. They couldn't have had a warmer welcome, if it had been organised by Cecil B. DeMille himself for a film. It was magnificent."

On claims in the first three Netflix films that they had been the victims of media intrusion and harassment by press photographers, Michael Cole said they had to differentiate between the legitimate press and the paparazzi.

"That's just a bloke with a camera, trying to get a lucky shot that he can sell." He said.

"This is all nonsense. No lesser person than the late Queen said to me once that 50% of her job was being seen. That she had to be seen to be believed.

"That is part of Royalty. Harry should know that, he does know rhat. And Meghan Markle knows that. She's in the world of showbusiness."

Mr Cole said that far from shunning press attention, the couple actively sought the media spotlight.

"A couple of nights ago in New York, there was a bank of cameras, the full Nikon orchestra was there.

If they didn't want that, they could have stayed home with their children in California."

"Essentially it's trivial. Where's the substance to their claims. It's all sizzle and no steak."

He added that the whole Netflix series would be a major turn off "If we're just going to be treated to six episodes of them blandly saying we're wonderful, and the others are horrible, we're right and they're wrong"
