It is believed that it was also the first time the King and Queen themselves had seen the finished portraits.
During the same event, the King unveiled a plaque commemorating the completion of a two-year building project and the reopening of the Sainsbury Wing.
John Booth, chairman of the National Gallery, delivered a short welcome speech before inviting Their Majesties to reveal the new portraits.
The King, a keen patron of the arts, attended despite once famously describing an extension of the gallery as a "monstrous carbuncle".
