Princess Charlotte turned 10 last week

King Charles has built a close bond with his granddaughter Princess Charlotte on his long-held desire to have a daughter in the family.

The child of Prince William and Princess Kate turned 10 last week and delighted royal watchers with her poised performance during VE Day on Monday.

Princess Charlotte joined her grandfather and other members of the Royal Family to observe the celebrations that marked 80 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe.

The King has two sons, Price William and Prince Harry, but is said to have “once wanted a daughter” by Ingrid Seward.

"I would think he has a very nice relationship with his granddaughter,” the royal expert revealed while speaking to People magazine.

Seward’s comments are supported by research undertaken by Anderw Morton for his book Diana: Her True Story.

"I knew Harry was going to be a boy because I saw on the scan," Diana is reported to have said after the birth of her second son with the then Prince of Wales.

She then said he always wanted a girl. He wanted two children, and he wanted a girl."

A girl was not to come however, and it appears Charles has immersed himself in the role of a grandfather to Charlotte as a result.

A sweet aspect of their relationship has been spotted by royal watchers who spied the King wearing a friendship bracelet Charlotte appears to have made for him.

The King would likely have been especially proud of his granddaughter as she impressed with her maturity during this week’s VE Day commemoration.

The Princess was seen alongside her mother and father, Princess Kate and Prince William, as well as her brothers George, 11, and Louis, 7.

Unlike her younger brother Louis, who was observed sweetly toying with his father's RAF uniform, Charlotte remained collected throughout proceedings.

Designer Amaia Arrieta, who has met Charlotte multiple times, celebrated the young princess’s performance.

"It's truly her personality it's not forced," Arrieta observed.

The designer praised: "She looks very confident and at ease with herself and the environment she's in. The maturity that comes with that responsibility—she seems to nail it every time."

Elsewhere, Charlotte’s unspringing has been breaking from royal tradition.

The young princess attends coed Lambrook prep school in Berkshire alongside her brothers, rather than an all-girls boarding school.

"The monarchy has caught up with modern times, and instead of insisting on all-girl (or all-boy) schools, they want them to integrate as much as possible," Seward analysed.

"The old rules of royalty have changed," she added.
