King Charles has outlined his dream to produce a runner for the Derby, one of the most prestigious horse races in the world.

If the goal can be achieved, it would mark the first time a monarch will have entered a thoroughbred in the world-famous race.

The late Queen Elizabeth II did not accomplish the feat; however, the King is keen to realise the ambition that eluded his mother.

During an official visit by both the King and Queen to the National Stud in Newmarket on Tuesday, the monarch's dream was outlined.

Brian Finch, chairman of Epsom Downs Racecourse, said after speaking to him: "We were talking about him getting a Derby runner and he said ‘We’re working on it’.

"Everybody is hoping the Royal Family will have a Derby winner soon."

The King and Queen spent the day in Newmarket with an engagement at The National Stud, an industry-leading stud services and boarding for mares, young stock, and spellers.

Stallions reside in the historic Duke of Roxburghe Stallion Unit, and over 100 thoroughbred foals are born each year in The Stud’s Foaling Unit.

Each year, over 6,000 people tour the facilities, of which over 1,000 visitors are from charities, schools, third-level education providers and community groups.

During a separate engagement in the region, the King and Queen met with the Chairman of Ipswich Football Club, Mark Ashton, at the King Edward VII Memorial Hall.
