The US President revealed King Charles would travel to the US ahead of the release of Buckingham Palace's statement

King Charles will travel to the United States for his scheduled State Visit after Donald Trump faced his third assassination attempt, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

Buckingham Palace released its statement just hours after the US President claimed the royals were still intending to embark on the scheduled trip.

"Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of Government, we can confirm the State Visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned," Buckingham Palace said.

"The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the Visit getting underway tomorrow."

Following last night's assassination attempt in Washington, Mr Trump suggested King Charles and Queen Camilla would still arrive in the US tomorrow.

The US President, who made the announcement ahead of the release of Buckingham Palace's statement, said: “First of all, King Charles is coming.

“He’s a great guy. We look forward to it," he said, phoning in to the US broadcaster.

"He's really a fantastic person and a tremendous representative. And he's brave. He's a friend of mine for a long time."

Mr Trump added: "So he's coming, and we're going to have a great time. And he represents his nation like nobody else can do it."

However, Buckingham Palace had been locked in talks about additional security measures following last night's shooting.

A senior palace source confirmed the decision to alter the programme was made on official advice at emergency meetings scheduled in the aftermath of the Washington Hilton shooting.

GB News understands that some operational adjustments will be included to the programme.

The trip had been thrown into doubt after last night's attempted assassination at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner at the Hilton hotel.

Mr Trump and senior members of his administration were swiftly evacuated from the scene by Secret Service agents.

King Charles's visit will mark the 250th anniversary of American independence and herald the start of celebrations across the US.

The monarch will also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks that brought down New York’s Twin Towers.

The shooting suspect, 31-year-old teacher Cole Tomas Allen, was armed with guns and knives when he stormed the lobby of the Washington Hilton.

Video footage showed the suspect running through a metal scanner outside the ballroom.

Secret Service agents raced to protect Mr Trump, taking the US President backstage.

One officer was shot but the bullet was prevented from doing major damage by a bulletproof vest.

The gunman, who was tackled to the ground, was not injured.

Allen has been taken into custody but is not cooperating with authorities.

Last night's incident in Washington is the third attempted assassination against Mr Trump since 2024.

The US President, who was at the time campaigning ahead of the 2024 US Presidential Election, was hit by a bullet during a rally in Pennsylvania.

Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, killed attendee Corey Comperatore, 50, a former volunteer fire chief who was in the crowd and shielding his family.
