Princess Kate's uncle Gary Goldsmith has opened up about his first meeting with Prince William.

The businessman, 58, is one of the new contestants on this year's series of Celebrity Big Brother.

During his introductory video, Goldsmith spoke about his meeting with the Prince of Wales for the first time.

In the short clip, Goldsmith says: "I'm Gary Goldsmith, the uncle to the future Queen of our country.

"Catherine is the current Princess of Wales. She is simply perfect."

He added: "The first time I met William, Catherine was cooking, and William said, 'Hi, do you want a cup of tea?'"

In his video, Goldsmith says people often consider him "a bit of a bad boy".

He added that going on Celebrity Big Brother would be "lovely to put the record straight".

However, he admitted that "winding people up is probably [his] favourite hobby" and that he is "an absolute nightmare to live with".

Meanwhile, in an interview with The Sun, Goldsmith defended his niece against the claims made about her in Omid Scobie's book Endgame.

He said: "She's beautiful on the outside, but more beautiful on the inside and really is a doting mum.

"That's why I got so upset with Harry and Meghan because you don't put a stick into that spoke and reinvent history.

"I've got pretty miffed when they had a pop at my beautiful niece who couldn't say anything for herself."

Goldsmith's appearance on Big Brother has been described as the "last thing [Kate] needs" as her recovery continues, a royal commentator claimed.

Royal commentator Phil Dampier said the 58-year-old businessman will likely go into the house "determined to only say nice things" about Kate and William.

However, he added: "After several days his tongue may loosen and he may say things he later regrets."

He is thought to have told friends that he won't do anything to embarrass Kate or William, but he has been openly critical of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Dampier also told The Mail: "The last thing the Princess of Wales needs at the moment is for her uncle to be talking about her on Celebrity Big Brother.

"And I'm not surprised at reports her mother Carole is not happy with her brother being in the house. I'm sure he will go in there determined to only say nice things about her and William as he has in the past.

"And he probably intends to criticise Harry and Meghan if he gets the chance. But after several days his tongue may loosen and he may say things he later regrets."
