Princess Charlotte is third in line to the throne, while Prince Louis is fourth in the Royal Family line of succession

Princess Kate and Prince William will rip up the Royal Family's rule book regarding the roles for Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, according to a royal commentator.

The Prince and Princess of Wales will look to carve out a pathway for Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, as their elder brother, Prince George, will one day be king.


The couple are open to their two younger children becoming working royals or pursuing private careers, according to a royal commentator.

Ingrid Seward told The I paper: "It’s not like it was in Charles’s youth, nowadays children make their own decisions.

"It’s just so different to when even William was brought up.

"I think children have immense choices now that they didn’t have even 15 years ago."

Marlene Koenig, a royal historian, added: "William and Catherine, to a certain extent, are going to rip up the rule book and do it their way."

Sally Bedell Smith, an American royal biographer, stated Princess Charlotte is more likely than Prince Louis to have a working role within the Royal Family.

She said: "I would imagine Charlotte will be part of the picture. I’m not so sure about Louis."

All of King Charles's siblings had working roles within the Royal Family.

Princess Anne and Prince Edward still hold their positions within the monarchy, but Prince Andrew stepped down as a working royal in 2019.

Prince William's brother, Prince Harry, also held a working role within the Royal Family until he decided to walk away from the Firm in 2020 alongside his wife, Meghan Markle.

As the monarchy becomes more streamlined, it will still be possible for both Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis to hold working roles within the Royal Family when they become adults.

Prince Harry wanted to secure a part-time working role for the Royal Family before his departure, but was told this was not possible.

King Charles's sister, Princess Anne, remains the hardest-working member of the Royal Family in terms of the number of engagements she attends.

As the monarchy becomes more streamlined, it will still be possible for both Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis to hold working roles within the Royal Family when they become adults.
