The Prince of Wales labelled 2024 ‘the hardest year’ of his life

Kate and Prince William are stronger as a couple after navigating the Princess of Wales’s health battle, according to an insider.

The Princess of Wales shared her diagnosis with the public in March 2024 through a deeply personal video message, revealing she had been found to have cancer.

Six months later, in September 2024, Kate confirmed she had finished her preventative chemotherapy course.

The 43-year-old then delivered welcome news at the start of last year, announcing in January 2025 that she was in remission.

Throughout the ordeal, William and Kate faced the additional pressure of managing their health crisis under intense public scrutiny, with the world watching as the princess stepped back from her official duties.

A source who has known the couple for many years told The Times: "On a very human level, if you go through an experience like this, it changes you.

"And it can change you for the good. At heart, they're both good, proper people. While you'd never wish it upon them, it's made them stronger as a couple and stronger as individuals, with probably more wisdom than they had before."

They added: "When your kids are young, you just barrel forward at great pace and everything is just about the growth of the family. And with this, you know, it's the obvious cliché, but it sort of stops you in your tracks."

Kate has returned to public life over the past twelve months, with figures revealing the scale of her recovery.

The princess undertook 68 official engagements throughout 2025, a dramatic rise from just 13 the previous year when she was undergoing treatment.

This represents a staggering 523 per cent increase in her workload as she gradually rebuilt her royal schedule.

The statistics demonstrate not only her physical recovery but also her determination to resume her role within the institution.

Prince William spoke candidly in October 2025 about the emotional toll Kate’s health battle had taken on him personally.

"You know, worry or stress around the family side of things that does overwhelm me quite a bit," he said.

The heir to the throne added: "When it's to do with family and things like that, then that's where I start getting a bit overwhelmed - as I think most people would, because it's more personal, it's more about feeling, it's more about upsetting the rhythm, if you like."

Kate herself addressed the difficulties of life after treatment during a visit to Colchester Hospital in Essex in July.

"You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment," she said. "Treatment's done, then it's like, 'I can crack on, get back to normal', but actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult."
