A Kensington Palace spokesman told GB News: 'The Wales family will move house later this year'

Princess Kate and Prince William are unlikely to retain Adelaide Cottage after moving to Forest Lodge later this year, a royal commentator has suggested.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are expected to adhere to an “important” royal necessity.

William and Kate are preparing to move away from the home they have shared with their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, since 2022.

It remains to be confirmed what will become of their relatively humble current abode when they upgrade to the grand Georgian manor house of Forest Lodge.

Veteran royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams believes the Waleses have “no reason” to retain Adelaide Cottage as a residence.

To that end, he explained the property would likely be available to rent to help keep the royal coffers buoyant.

“I am sure that it will be rented out. It's important that the monarchy gets as much as it can from rentals,” he exclusively told GB News.

Fitzwilliams added that the Waleses' other residences, Kensington Palace, Anmer Hall, the soon-to-be Forest Lodge, and one day Buckingham Palace would be sufficient.

However, Fitzwilliams believes William and Kate may also wish to leave Adelaide Cottage behind for a “personal” reason.

“This is something for the Waleses personally. For their family,” he said.

The commentator highlighted what had been a “hellish” stay for the couple since moving to the cottage in 2022.

Just weeks after settling in, Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral, and the home would also become the place of convalescence for Princess Kate during her cancer battle in 2024.

King Charles’s own ongoing treatment for cancer cast an additional shadow over royal affairs during that "really rough time” for the family.

As such, Fitzwilliams feels there may not be the same sentimental attachment to Adelaide Cottage.

His comments echoed those from a source close to the Waleses who said that, while the family have settled in Windsor as “their home,” their current abode carries too much baggage.

“Over the last few years while they have lived at Adelaide Cottage, there have been some really difficult times,” the insider explained.

Moving home now offers the family "an opportunity for a fresh start and a new chapter; an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind."

“This is a move for the long-term. They see it as their forever home,” the source told The Sun.

The family's "forever home" will be Forest Lodge, an eight-bedroom property within Windsor Great Park.
