Idris Elba has spoken for the first time since receiving a knighthood from King Charles.

Sir Idris was named as part of the King’s New Year's Honours List for his work in the fight against youth violence, highlighting his years of advocacy and practical initiatives aimed at creating opportunities for the next generation to steer them away from crime.

The revered actor is best known for his role as DCI John Luther in the acclaimed BBC crime drama Luther.

Speaking for the first time since being given the honour, Sir Idris said: “I haven't really spoken about it, but I will say that it's a real honour to be recognised for the work.

“Especially trying to make as much noise for young people and the things that some of them are going through.

“So it feels like an honour. My family is honoured by it. I don't even know how to talk about it.

“I know people are saying, 'Should I call you sir now? Should I curtsy?’”

He laughed and concluded to People: “Same old Idris. Simple.”

The 53-year-old was honoured alongside actors Warwick Davis and Cynthia Erivo.

When his knighthood was announced, Sir Idris released a statement stating: “I receive this honour on behalf of the many young people whose talent, ambition and resilience has driven the work of the Elba Hope Foundation.

Among other actors, Mr Davis received an OBE for his services to drama and charity.

The 55-year-old is best known for his roles in the Star Wars and Harry Potter franchises and has been acting for over 40 years.

Mr Davis will be given the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire after receiving the highest honour from Bafta earlier in the year.

He received the Bafta Fellowship for his performing and advocacy work, and at the time said: “This is the best thing that’s ever happened to me and I’ve been in Star Wars.”

He dedicated the award to his wife, Samantha, who died in 2024 and was also an actress.
