Republic has described the Order of the Garter ceremony as 'a medieval hangover'

The anti-monarchy campaign group Republic is planning a major demonstration at this year's Order of the Garter ceremony, scheduled for Monday, June 15 at Windsor Castle.

In a press release, the organisation revealed it has "an exciting action planned" for the royal event and is seeking monarchy sceptics to participate.

The group has explained that those interested in observing the protest must apply through the traditional route, but conceal their reason for attending.

Republic, which exists to advocate for the replacement of the monarchy with a de jure parliamentary republic, emphasised that building a large pool of ticket holders would increase the likelihood of their planned demonstration succeeding at the historic ceremony.

Republic has explicitly warned applicants to conceal their affiliation with the campaign group when requesting tickets.

"Make sure to only put your name, address, and a simple request for a ticket as if you wanted to go to see the parade. Do not mention a Republic action!" the organisation stated in its press release.

The group is encouraging supporters to apply even if they remain uncertain about attending or participating in the demonstration.

The Order of the Garter ceremony, which Republic has described as "a medieval hangover," honours those deemed loyal to the sovereign through elaborate pageantry.

The annual event brings together King Charles III alongside senior members of the Royal Family, including the Prince of Wales, the Princess Royal, and the Duke of Edinburgh.

The ceremony also features 24 Knights or Ladies Companion, Officers of the Order, foreign monarchs known as "Stranger Knights," and the Military Knights of Windsor.

The Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Edinburgh typically attend together, with their fashion choices drawing considerable attention as they accompany their husbands at the Windsor Castle proceedings.

Republic has characterised the monarchy as experiencing "their worst crisis in living memory" and stated the planned action at the Garter ceremony is intended to maintain pressure on the institution.

The Windsor Castle demonstration was not listed among the group's primary protest targets for 2025. Instead, Republic concentrated its major campaign efforts on two other royal occasions last year.

The organisation announced a substantial, sustained protest at Trooping the Colour on June 14, the day before the Garter ceremony.

Additionally, the group confirmed plans for a demonstration during Commonwealth Day events in March as part of its ongoing anti-monarchy campaign.
