Prince Edward is known for his love of the creative industry

Prince Edward has announced a new patronage to mark World Theatre Day.

The Duke of Edinburgh has taken on the role of patron at Viva Arts and Community Group, a small charitable organisation based in Soham, Cambridgeshire.

Dan Schumann, who founded the group in 1997, expressed his delight at the news.

"To get that kind of endorsement for a tiny little charity tucked away in Soham is incredible and extraordinary, and we're so honoured," he said.

The founder described the patronage as "a wonderful stamp of approval after all of the work."

Mr Schumann called it "the highest possible endorsement" and said the association with royalty represented recognition unlike any other for the Cambridgeshire arts charity.

The connection between the duke and Viva stretches back to 2023, when he officially opened The Viva Theatre, which operates within a converted biscuit mill.

Mr Schumann revealed he had maintained contact with the prince since that inaugural visit.

The patronage arrangement came about after the founder wrote directly to the palace, proposing the role to Prince Edward.

"It's an endorsement like no other. It's the highest possible endorsement, in my view," Mr Schumann said.

"For Viva, it's terribly exciting to have that high-level association."

The charity stages regular productions featuring performers from the local area and provides classes for young people interested in theatre.

Mr Schumann established the organisation nearly three decades ago, building it into the community arts hub it represents today.

In his capacity as patron, Prince Edward has committed to championing greater access to cultural activities through his support of Viva's work.

The organisation's mission centres on enriching lives through artistic engagement, offering both theatrical performances and educational opportunities for younger members of the community.

Julie Spence, the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, praised the charity's contribution to the region.

"The Duke of Edinburgh's patronage is a wonderful recognition of the important work Viva is doing," she said.

Ms Spence noted that the organisation was having an "extraordinary impact" on those it serves.

"I know it will inspire the organisation to continue growing and reaching even more people in the years ahead," the Lord Lieutenant added.
