Every detail within the Royal Household's control appeared to go without a hitch

The Royal Family is the UK Government's ace card during President Trump's unprecedented second State Visit to the United Kingdom.

President Trump responds well to flattery, pomp, pageantry and being made to feel like the most important person in the room.

On every element, the Royal Household and Armed Forces went the extra mile to make the President feel special and welcome.

A royal carriage ride to King Charles' castle, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and an invitation to inspect the largest ever Guard of Honour in living memory, clearly impressed the President.

So too did the RAF Red Arrows, flying over Windsor Castle at the end of the military spectacle Beating Retreat - another rare honour for a visiting Head of State.

Every detail within the Royal Household's control appeared to go without a hitch; the only thing they couldn't control was the weather.

Unfortunately, this meant the military display of UK and US F-35 fighter jets couldn't go ahead, designed to visualise the United Kingdom and the United States' military and defence cooperation.

From a personal perspective, I was given special access inside St George's Chapel in Windsor to observe President Trump and First Lady Melania up close.

It was clear the President was at ease with the media, acknowledging us every moment he could with a wave, smile, glare, or the odd remark.

When the choir of St George's Chapel was performing Vivaldi's Gloria, at times, President Trump appeared more interested in us, occasionally peering over to his right to see what we were doing.

However, when he was shown Sir Winston Churchill's Garter stall plates, a permanent memorial of the wartime leader's membership of the Order of the Garter, Donald Trump was very attentive.

The feature that got him most animated inside the chapel, however, was learning about the mechanical lift which lowers a coffin into the Royal Vault - last publicly used during Queen Elizabeth II's Committal Service in September 2022.

The State Banquet, hosted by King Charles in the President's honour, was the usual white tie affair.

The Princess of Wales dazzled in a British-designed golden gown by Phillipa Lepley, and Queen Mary's Lover's Knot Tiara.

Her Royal Highness sat next to the President during the banquet, who appeared very happy to be in her company.

Although hospitality is one element of the King's soft diplomacy, convening power could be seen as equally important.

American businesses, worth billions of dollars, were represented at the table, including Apple and Google - big tech investors that Chancellor Rachel Reeves will hope to take advantage of to boost the ailing British economy.

The Royal Family have played their part; let's see if President Trump receiving the 'royal treatment' will persuade him to cut Britain some slack during tough political negotiations today at Chequers.
