The restaurant took to social media to announce the special occasion, though respectfully refrained from publishing any images of the royal party.

The establishment wrote on Facebook: "Every now and then something happens that sends a little fizz of excitement through the whole place and this week delivered a corker.

"Last Friday, in our teeny Hungerford Bistro, we had the enormous pleasure of welcoming a rather extraordinary guest. We can already hear the chorus from Newbury: 'Go on then who was it?'

"Well none other than the Princess of Wales herself, Berkshire’s very own Kate Middleton, celebrating her 44th birthday, joined by her mother Carole and sister Pippa.

"Right here in Hungerford. No photos to share (you’ll understand why), but the entire team on duty reported the same thing: she was utterly charming, gracious and every bit as radiant in person as you’d imagine.

"The jungle drums of Hungerford didn’t stop beating until well into Saturday.

"A little moment of magic for our small bistro and one we won’t forget in a hurry. Happy Birthday."

The Funghi Club prides itself on accessible pricing, with its à la carte menu featuring dishes entirely under £25.

Diners at the Hungerford location can choose from options including onion soup at £9, pork terrine for £10, and beef bourguignon priced at £21 for those seeking something more substantial.

The bistro describes itself as offering a relaxed atmosphere without rigid distinctions between courses, focusing on seasonal ingredients and value for money.

The venue also operates a branch in Marlborough, the town where Kate attended school during her youth.

Whether the princess enjoyed any wine or cocktails with her birthday meal remains unknown.

Kate also marked her birthday last Thursday with the release of a deeply personal video reflecting on her cancer journey and the solace she has found in the natural world.

Kensington Palace published the final part of the "Mother Nature" series, featuring the princess walking through the Berkshire countryside near her Windsor residence.

In the accompanying voiceover, she spoke of her fears and tears during treatment, expressing profound gratitude for her recovery.

"I find myself reflecting on how deeply grateful I am," she said, adding that the experience had helped her "discover what it means to be alive."

The princess completed her preventative chemotherapy course in 2024 and announced her remission at the start of last year.
