It comes after the Duchess of Edinburgh cried during the Remembrance Sunday service

The Duchess of Edinburgh is embarking on an extensive 10-day journey through South and Central America today, undertaking her inaugural visits to Peru, Panama, Guatemala and Belize.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office requested Sophie's presence in the first three nations, whilst her Belize visit forms part of the Royal Family's ongoing Commonwealth Realm engagements.

The tour, running until November 19, encompasses diverse diplomatic and humanitarian objectives.

These range from environmental conservation initiatives and Indigenous community engagement to addressing human trafficking concerns and supporting her role with international blindness prevention efforts.

Sophie's Peruvian itinerary features a journey into the Amazon rainforest for discussions with Indigenous community leaders.

She will engage with women who maintain their communities via environmental and economic initiatives.

In her capacity as Global Ambassador for The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, the Duchess will tour the Divino Niño vision centre.

The facility specialises in managing glaucoma and pterygium conditions, and Sophie will learn about their clinical services during her visit.

These engagements reflect the tour's dual focus on environmental sustainability and healthcare access in remote regions.

The Duchess will meet high-ranking Panamanian government officials, acknowledging the nation's partnership with Britain on international issues, particularly regarding conflict-related sexual violence.

Her Guatemalan schedule includes observing civil society organisations that assist survivors of sexual violence and human trafficking.

Sophie will tour a charity dedicated to helping at-risk youth in Guatemala. Additionally, she will witness Indigenous-led conservation programmes in the Maya Biosphere Reserve's isolated and ecologically rich areas.

These Central American engagements demonstrate Britain's commitment to supporting vulnerable populations whilst recognising local conservation leadership in some of the region's most biodiverse territories.

The Commonwealth Realm of Belize marks the final destination, where Sophie will participate in Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations, recognising the nation's cultural diversity.

Her programme includes examining Belizean marine ecosystem protection efforts and touring the British Army Training Support Unit Belize to observe overseas jungle training operations.

This diplomatic mission follows closely after Prince William's return from Brazil, where he attended the Earthshot Prize Awards. The timing places two senior royals in South America within days of each other.

Yesterday's Remembrance Sunday service saw Sophie visibly emotional, standing alongside the Duke of Kent at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office building. The Duke's wife, Katharine, died on September 4.

Sophie's visible distress during the solemn ceremony highlighted the poignancy of the occasion.

Today's departure for her four-nation tour marks a swift transition from remembrance duties to international diplomatic engagements.
