Russian officials went on to tell Mr Putin to call the US President a 'real peace man'

Steve Witkoff, Donald Trump's special envoy, coached Russian officials on how to present their Ukraine peace proposal to the US President.

The call occurred on October 14 between Mr Witkoff and Yuri Ushakov, a senior aide to Vladimir Putin.

During the conversation, the US envoy suggested talking up the Gaza peace plan, telling Ushakov: "We put a 20-point Trump plan together that was 20 points for peace and I'm thinking maybe we do the same thing with you."

The discussion centred on a draft 28-point peace proposal that has sparked controversy in Kyiv and Europe due to its Moscow-friendly provisions.

Bloomberg has now published a transcript showing Mr Witkoff offering specific advice on how to approach Mr Trump.

"Here's what I would do. My recommendation," he said, according to the transcript.

"I would make the call and just reiterate that you congratulate the President on this achievement, that you supported it... that you respect that he is a man of peace and you're just, you're really glad to have seen it happen," he advised, referring to the Gaza deal.

Mr Ushakov responded positively, saying: "I think that very point our leaders could discuss."

The Putin aide indicated the Russian premier would go on to describe Trump as a "real peace man".

Elsewhere in their call, Mr Witkoff told Mr Ushakov he held "the deepest respect" for Mr Putin.

The special envoy also suggested Ukraine might need to surrender Donetsk and mentioned "maybe a land swap somewhere" as part of potential territorial arrangements if and when the war comes to an end.

He also advised that Mr Putin should contact his American counterpart before Volodymyr Zelensky's White House visit on October 17.

These recommendations came as Trump's attitude towards the Russian President appeared to markedly improve.

"I don't know why he continues with this war," Mr Trump said on the same day as the Witkoff-Ushakov call.

"He just doesn't want to end that war. And I think it's making him look very bad," the Commander-in-Chief added.

Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, has heavily backed Mr Witkoff after the transcripts came to light.

"This story proves one thing: special envoy Witkoff talks to officials in both Russia and Ukraine nearly every day to achieve peace, which is exactly what President Trump appointed him to do," Mr Cheung blasted.

Mr Trump said on Tuesday that the initial peace proposal had undergone "fine-tuning" after feedback from both Moscow and Kyiv.

The peace plan was effectively ripped up, then reduced from 28 to 19 points through heavy negotiations.

However, the US President said "a few remaining points of disagreement" persist between the parties involved.

Mr Witkoff will now head to Moscow for direct talks with Mr Putin to finalise the agreement.
